Have you ever wonder what does it take to operate a big corporation, business or an organization? I have sometimes wondered what would be like to own and what it would take to run a big corporation. I can imagine that running a big corporation would be difficult and it would take a lot of effort to have a successful corporation. Since it is a big corporation I was mostly interested in learning more about the Walmart Corporation. Walmart’s operations management covers a mixture of concepts that focus on managing the supply chain and inventory, as well as sales performance2. The company has become successful because it follows an effective performance in operations management2. This paper will be giving some information about Walmart and how it came to be. Also, there will be an analysis of the different business operations as they are implemented in the corporation and they will be compared to an optimal operating procedure. A Short Story A Story - 1746 Words

â€Å"I’m off to work!† Cole shouts to his parents as he closes the house door behind him. Today is his first day of work, and he is very excited. When Cole moved to the city, he found a job at one of the factories, and being inspired by machinery, he applied and was accepted. Cole is 17 years old, and is tall with black hair and a thin build. As a kid, he loved school, and would go voluntarily unlike some of his classmates, and so he is expecting great things from his first job. From his house, Cole starts walking down the main street of the city. People bustle all around him, and he is shoved in all directions. Desperate to get out of the flow of pedestrians, Cole pushes through to the side of the road, out of the way. He rapidly stands up, suddenly realizing he is late for work, and sprints down the many streets to his job. Antiquity Poem

Question: Choose two sonnets from the textbook. Ideally, these two should focus on interpersonal relationships. Compare and contrast how each sonnet discusses an individual's obligation to love or desire an other. In other words, what do these two sonnets say about how love and desire should be enacted? Answer: The antiquity of the poetic form had been refined by the representation of the two most significant poets, Petrarch and Shakespeare through sonnets. The consolidation of technicality is vastly articulated by expressing lyrically the theme of love by their most preserved poems, cherishing love. While, Francesco Petrarch had experimented with the traditional sonnet structure to define it into a more constructive form, consisting of octave and sestave, William Shakespeare used the structure of his Sonnet in a more conventionalized form to celebrate his love poetry, by employing three quatrains and one couplet (Davis, 2002). I have ensured two most commemorated poems: Petrarch's Sonnet 140 and Sonnet 130 of Shakespeare, to point out the contrasting features of desiring love in uncomely terms. Petrarchs poetry is mostly dedicated to courtly love to idolize the love and hope of his life called Laura. Unlike Petrarch, Shakespeare has designed his sonnets into two lovers: fair youth and dark lady. The two entitled poems of the two poets have different visions of love. In Petrarch sonnet no 140, he has adored his beloved in his imagination which is platonic and based, truly on contemplation from a distantance. The following literal prose: Amor, che nel penser mio vive e regna E 'l suo seggio maggior nel mio cor tene Has a significant connotation that love has its own terms to reign in the heart of a lover. Here the lover has modest thoughts even after losing his lady, forever. As she teaches him to be strong and self-effacing under any unfavorable circumstances, the lover restrains his evil desires to keep every promise he made. The principle of love is highlighted in a dignified way and every burning hope is disdained by the lover himself (Edwards, 2015). According to his belief, a love can be eulogized, if a lover accepts every possible condition of love, in an affirmative approach. He cannot survive the battle of love, if his lady love abandoned him for the sake of being afraid. He can only wish to be strong to accept the lamentation which covers his heart for the rest of his life. To many researchers, Petrarchs way of love is untainted and defines love which is invented for the sake of his beloved Laura (Forti and Bermann, 1991). In a unique contrast to Petrarch, Shakespeare has expressed reciprocal love form, for both the lovers in love. Basically, sonnet 130 is a conventional love sonnet which has eternalized the beauty of the lover by establishing many facts of comparison to other beauties. For example, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips red; Here the eyes, lips, cheeks and even forehead and breasts of the lover is memorialized to sun, coral, dun-colored, white snow and black wires. The lover is astonished with the beauty of his lover and compares her with goddess, as he cannot be more pleased than before. Every stated comparison has been invoked to establish the described beauty of his mistress (Hedley and Roche, 1990). The early editor believes that the sonnet represents, simply the face value of the mistress over love of the lover. As the poem, actually compliments the qualities of the lover and physicality: this is highly expressed to give an erotized form to exhibit love in a youthful stage. It is remarkably true, that Shakespeare has neither used allusion nor grandiose metaphor to evoke ordinary humanly beauty. His theme is typical love poetry which has all the elements to mock traditional Petrarchan sonnet (Ribes, 2012). Thus, Shakespeare has ensured every technique to portray his way of parody of the Petrarchs famous sonnet. The poet had idolized his love Laura in series of extraordinary metaphors which was beyond human expectations and not accepted in Shakespeares time. But Shakespeare has embraced one popular theme called consuming love which is highly celebrated in Petrarchan sonnet. In many ways, the sonnets of Shakespeare have reversed the conventions of love which was the fundamental theme of the Petrarchan love sequence. He has denied the traditional form to express the beauty of the mistress and focus on the intentions which invoke love. It is interesting to note that the literary figure known as dark lady of Shakespeare is inspired from the Petrarchan sole lo ver, Laura (Trueman, 1974). The sonnet of Petrarch is focused to established love to single lover with a heart as pure as gold but obviously, has some touch of eroticized expressions to give volume to that expressed love. (P.7) Throughout this scene, Lees hostile attitude towardsAustin constantly disrupts the flow of the conversation, and is a continualreminder that these two men have an unresolved internal conflict. Both brothersrealize that they each come from two different walks of life, but it is Austinwho chooses to believe that his way of life is superior. While Austin has, asLee puts it, the wife and kiddiesthe house, the car, the wholeslam(p.9), we never discover if Lee owns anything at all, or is just atransient burglar. Lee has much to be jealous of in Austin. Austin, however, hasvery little to be jealous of in Lee. Lee is a thief who hasnt ever settleddown into anything. In this first scene, the overall emphasis of power betweenthe brothers is material possessions, and Austin definitely has the power overLee. The first scene defines each character and what they are. Lee on the other hand becomes more focused and calm as theplay proceeds. With the unresolved ending, the play leaves the resolution of thetwo brothers up to speculation. While neither of the brothers knows what willhappen to themselves, their mother says it best, I see. Dantes Canto XXVIII Essays - Divine Comedy, Afterlife, Italy, Virgil

Dante's Canto XXVIII Dante begins the opening of Canto XXVIII with a rhetorical question. Virgil and he have just arrived in the Ninth Abyss of the Eighth Circle of hell. In this pouch the Sowers of Discord and Schism are continually wounded by a demon with a sword. Dante poses a question to the reader: Who, even with untrammeled words and many attempts at telling, ever could recount in full the blood and wounds that I now saw? (Lines 1-3) The rhetorical question draws the reader into the passage because we know by this point in the Divine Comedy that Dante is a great poet. What is it that Dante sees before him on the brink of the Ninth Abyss that is so ineffable that he, as a poet, feels he cannot handle? In the following lines Dante expands on this rhetorical position. He elaborates on why it is important for any man to offer a good description of what he sees. No poet can achieve this description: ?Each tongue that tried would certainly fall short...? (L. 4) It is not just poetic talent that is at stake; poets do not have the background to give them the poetic power for such description. His reasoning is "the shallowness of both our speech and intellect cannot contain so much." (Lines 5-6) Once again the reader is intrigued; how could a man of Dante's stature criticize language which is the very tool he uses to create the epic work of La Commedia ? If we cannot take Dante seriously with these opening statements, we must pose the question of what Dante is trying to do by teasing us with this artificial beginning to Canto XVIII? Dante will now contradict himself and try to describe what he says is impossible. But, if he were to go right into a description of the Ninth Abyss, it would deflate his rhetorical position. Instead, Dante first sets up a quite lengthy comparison of the sights he has just witnessed with examples of bloodshed throughout human history. Were you to reassemble all the men who once, within Apulia1's fateful land, had mourned their blood, shed at the Trojans' hands, as well as those who fell in the long war where massive mounds of rings were battle spoils-- even as Livy write, who does not err-- and those who felt the thrust of painful blows when they fought hard against Robert Guiscard; with all the rest whose bones are still piled up at Ceperano--each Apulian was a traitor there--and, and too, at Tabliacozzo, where old Alardo conquered without weapons; and then, were one to show his limb pierced through and one his limb hacked off, that would not match the hideousness of the ninth abyss. (Lines 7-21) Dante gives historical examples of the destruction of war. This is in contrast to the heroic qualities of war which Dante's predecessors most often focus on. Dante is acting less as a poet and more as an historian. He takes the reader on a mini journey through these wars. His first stop are the Trojan wars (Line 9). These wars Dante refers to actually represent the final books of Virgil's Aeneid. Part of my experience in reading the Inferno, has been that there is a great connection between the Inferno and the Aeneid. Furthermore, Dante's guide through hell is the author of the Aeneid, Virgil. (While this topic is much too broad to address in these pages, it is important too take note of this relationship.) On the one hand it is important that Virgil is Dante's first example because it is necessary for him to leave the world of the poet (poets do not have enough talent) and move to the world of the historian, whose objectivity is supposedly more trusted in front of this horror. By this time the reader can see the irony of what Dante is doing in this opening passage. Dante the poet must give up to historical fact, but the reader knows that Dante the poet is playing this game to entice the reader into listening to him. As social workers are involved with comparatively powerless people within the community, they are in an influential position with regards to the fair treatment of many disadvantaged individuals. This unfair treatment comes in the forms of discrimination and oppression. Discrimination can be defined as the act of giving less favourable treatment, through prejudice and stereotype, of individuals typically belonging to groups who are a relatively powerless part of society. Discrimination can come in several forms: Direct Discrimination, which can be seen directed against gender when, for example, a female is denied a job interview as it is believed she will not fit into the masculine environment. Indirect Discrimination is present when the intentions of a rule or policy do not display apparent discrimination, but can result in unequal treatment. Harassment is the occurance of unjust treatment towards a person due to a particular characteristic, such as ethnicity, which makes for an undesirable and sometimes hostile environment or brings about a violation of the victim’s dignity. Victimisation can occur when a person rightly makes a complaint in line with the Equality Act, and this results in malevolence or negative treatment towards the complainant. From personal experience, I have witnessed this occur within interactions between members of front of house and kitchen staff in a restaurant, wherein an intentionally hostile and cold atmosphere was created for the individual who lodged the complaint. Oppression is the act of taking the prejudice inherent in Direct and Indirect Discrimination further through negative and unfair wielding of power, inflicting hardship and disadvantage upon those seemingly inferior in the social structure. This power being a force for controlling people which those apparently more dominant in the hierarchy are capable of exerting. The forms Oppression takes include such systems as ageism, sexism, classism, and those in dominant positions use these systems to limit rights and freedoms of these individuals and this unjust domination adversely affects a person’s life chances. Due to variables inherent in peoples identity, such as age, ethnicity and gender, an individual oppressed on the grounds of skin colour may also be considered to have an advantage over someone considered â€Å"old† in socially constructed value as far as age is concerned, and thus could fall into the role of â€Å"oppressor†. In a bid to challenge and reduce structural disadvantage, discrimination and oppression within care work, framework for Anti-Discriminatory Practice (A. D. P. ) has been introduced. A main focus of A. D. P.  is â€Å"putting the client in their social context†, which is the acknowledgement of not only characteristics specific to different groups, but also characteristics unique to a particular individual, and the tailoring of care in relation to these differences to avoid undermining diversity, as is considered good practice in social work. It recognizes that uniform care does not work effectively for everybody, such as assumed homogeny when treating those of ethnic minorities in an identical manner to when treating a client from the dominant culture. This could also be viewed as a method of assimilation into the norms of that society, and can be an oppression of identity. Previously, MANAGEMENT? had deemed A. D. P. unimportant (Thompson/Dvies? )and such outlooks made care liable to adopt such exclusive atiitudes as the colour-blind and gender-blind approaches. These are terms that refer to the ignorance of ethnic and gender influences on an individuals personality, resulting in inappropriate and even oppressive treatment caused possibly by care with male or dominant culture bias. Though these two particular groups are highlighted, discrimination in care work methods can also affect other disadvantaged demographics such as the disabled, elderly and those of different religious beliefs. Thompson argues that maintaining an awareness of A. D. P. is essential in combating discrimination and oppression, and that refusing to intervene becomes â€Å"part of the problem†. Furthermore, Giddens (1977) supports the view that failing nuetral use of professional power allows inequalities to persist, and that it must be used proactively to transform oppressive structures. Giddens also notes that negative use of this power can reinforce inequalities. Another important part A. D. P. is Giddens’ â€Å"Emancipatory Politics†(1991) which aims at liberating clients from their disadvantaged positions. Identified within this are three â€Å"imperatives† to keep mindful of, the first being Justice, which is suggestive of fair treatment and the confidence that people will not be exploited or have rights denied. Equality is the next, which opposes uniform treatment, identifying it as a barrier to fairness. Thirdly, Participation is a key concept in objectives to emancipate and empower clients to better cope with, or be liberated from their circumstances, all the while using the client’s legitimate power to counter the power abuse brought about by discrimination and oppression. This involves cooperation of social workers and service users in planning and evaluating services to improve empowerment opportunities and to help the service provide suitable care (Beresford and Croft 1993, in Davies?). In A. D. P, this relationship is recognised as a â€Å"partnership†, a more sensitive term which is not suggestive of power interactions, but more on mutual agreement (Thompson, 1996, DAVIES? ) promoting a sensitivity and understanding about the inequalities to be addressed. Using the word â€Å"partnership† can also foster an element of trust between the two parties, as social workers are so often demonised in the media, and this enhances mistrust towards them. These relationships can run into conflicts between parties, though long-term success relies on not abandoning the partnership and maintaining professional willingness. (DAVIES? ) An important focus in Participation is to enable the client to use their own power to liberate themselves from oppression, and to avoid the â€Å"benign paternalism† of the past which created an environment of dependency through protecting the less fortunate from their problems (Bailey and Brake, 1975 DAVIES). A complication to fair practice in social work is that some situations can be complex and open to numerous interpretations, and this is where the judgement of a professional, takes precedence over technical reasoning and codes of practice (jordan, 1990 pp. 3-4, DAVIES? ). In making professional judgements, moral reasoning and due analysis must be taken to avoid â€Å"messy situations†(Schon, 1983). Also essential for professionals to possess a sensitivity towards feelings when making such decisions. Insensitive intervention is a contradiction of A. D. P. and have more negative effects than positive (DAVIES?  ) Professionals being a person with attributes such as having engaged in lengthy training with assessment of competence, authority acknowledged by service users and a thorough theory of field based on reasearch evidence (Banks, 2001, Gomm, 1996 BRIANS HANDOUT). Though care must be taken in relation to these decisions to ensure there is no abuse of professional’s power resulting in coercion upon service users(Davies), and instead that it supports equality and emancipation. God separated heaven and earth with the firmament (Ideas, p.80), imposing order on these already existing forms, much like Marduk did in Enuma Elish. People were created from dust similar to the clay used in both Mesopotamian myths, and imbued with a part of God, in male and female forms in our [Gods] likeness-thus, the Hebrews also believe that people are a consummate work of art (Ideas, p.79). Cell Phones Are Dangerous Essay Having a cell phone in today’s society has become a regular part of life. Even I have a cell phone and I’m really not a big talker. What’s astonishing to me is kids seem to all have cell phones by the time they get into middle school. We rely on these communication devices for every aspect of our daily lives, whether for personal use or for work. To me we rely so heavily on the cell phone that it is becoming dangerous. Think to a time when you were driving down the road and came up on a slower vehicle. They were swerving within their lane, couldn’t keep a constant speed and just seemed like they were completely distracted and not paying attention to the road and the seemingly easy task of driving. You want to get by the person but every time an opportunity to do so came into view it would quickly disappear because the other driver would speed up or do something to avert your opportunity. Finally you get your chance and go around the person. You look over in an attempt to quench your curiosity and see the person is talking on their cell phone. It all makes sense now; they are paying more attention to the conversation they have going on than to their driving. Driving is a dangerous activity in itself, but when you add other distractions like talking and or texting on a cell phone, the outcomes can be anything but pleasant and lead to extensive consequences. Drivers are far more distracted while talking on a cell phone than just talking to a passenger in the car. Recently my wife and I were going to a store. I have driven this route several times and knew exactly where to turn, but because of the distraction of talking, I missed my turn. This happened with just a passenger in the car. I can only assume if I had a cell phone up to my ear, or even using a hands free device that the outcome could have been worse due to the higher level of distraction. A study at the University of Utah in 2008, led by Frank Drews, PhD, analyzed the driving performance of mostly young adult drivers paired with friends who served as conversation partners. In the cell-phone conversation condition, drivers conversation partners were at another location. In the in-car conversation condition, partners sat next to their drivers. In each of the experiments, one person was randomly selected to be the driver and the other the conversation partner. Throughout the extensive study, drivers talking by cell phone drove significantly worse than drivers talking to passengers. The cell-phone users were more likely to drift in their lane, kept a greater distance between their car and the car in front, and were four times more likely to miss their designated turn. Passenger conversation barely affected all three measures (American Psychological Association, 2008). Another study by a University of South Carolina psychology researcher provides a better understanding of why talking and listening on a cell phone interferes with visual tasks such as driving. In two different experiments, associate professor of psychology Dr. Amit Almor found that planning to speak and speaking put far more demands on the brain’s resources than listening. The study measured drivers attention levels and found people were four times more distracted while preparing to speak or speaking than when listening (University of South Carolina, 2008). This all makes sense to me, you are trying to multi-task and when you do that you are splitting your attention between two or more things, thus reducing your overall awareness. Yet, there are a lot of people that still believe they drive just fine while talking on the phone. People also believe because they use a hands-free device while talking it doesn’t affect their driving. I agree, but your still talking on the phone while driving. The National Safety Council has done extensive research studies and has stated, â€Å"drivers using hands-free phones and those using handheld phones have a tendency to â€Å"look at† but not â€Å"see† objects. These distracted drivers experience what researchers call inattention blindness. The drivers are looking out the windshield but they are not processing everything in the roadway environment† (National Safety Council, 2010). This inattention blindness causes slower reaction times, which is going to cause problems if anything unexpected happens around you. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need to read a bunch of studies to know that slower reaction times will cause you to miss things when you are driving. Since I’ve showed you how talking on the phone can be distracting, what do you think texting is going to do? Texting is the craze now, and it seems everybody is doing it. Why not, with these new smart phones that almost everybody has now days, it has become very easy to do. Even I do it on occasion, which is surprising because before I had a smart phone, if someone texted me I would just call them rather than text back. Teenagers have this texting thing mastered. I watch my teenage daughter text and ould swear she is typing 100 words per minute or more. With teens being the default experts at texting, do you think only they are irresponsible enough to text message while driving? If your answer is yes, then you are wrong. Yes, teens text, but according to an article in USA Today, â€Å"youre looking at around 10 million teen drivers, but about 180 million other adult drivers. Almost half of all adults admit to texting while driving in a survey by ATT provided to USA today, compared with 43% of teenagers. More than 98% of adults — almost all of them — admit they know its wrong† (USA Today, 2013). We know its wrong, yet we still do it. Is this setting a good example for our teens? I think we are setting them up for failure. Think about how long it takes for you to do a text and take into consideration your doing it with one hand since you need to keep on hand on the steering wheel. How long did you take your eyes off the road? Shockingly, texting drivers take their eyes off the road for each text an average of 4. seconds, which at 55 mph, means they were driving the length of a football field without looking (Davis, 2010). Yes there are a lot of excuses such as traffic was light, or I’m going slow, or I’m at a light. To me these are â€Å"just excuses†. Each time you take your focus off the road, even if just for a split second, you’re putting your life and the lives of others in danger. According to the U. S. Department of Transportation distracted driving-related crashes caused at least 5,500 deaths and nearly 450,000 injuries in 2009 (Johnson, 2013). I imagine these numbers have gone up since then with the advancement in technology and the rise in popularity of cell phones. The University of North Texas Health Science Center has looked at traffic data from the Fatality Accident Reporting System and texting data from the FCC and CTIA, and came to the conclusion that texting while driving is responsible for accidents that claimed 16,141 lives during the period of 2001 – 2007 (Chester, 2010). Common sense should tell you that texting and driving is dangerous, but plenty of people continue to do it. In an article from Psychology Today, statistics from surveys report that 97 percent of teens admit that texting while driving is dangerous, yet they still do it and 43 percent of them teens actually admitted to texting while driving. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to be in an accident. The National Safety Council says texting while driving is to blame for 1,600,000 accidents per year. The Harvard Center for Risk Analysis Study accounts 330,000 injuries per year and 11 teen deaths every day according to the Institute for Highway Safety Fatality Facts (Lohmann, 2012). If these statistics don’t scare you and make you rethink how your possible bad habits affect other people then maybe you should just turn in your drivers license and take the bus. Due to all the distractions that cell phones create and the dangers associated with this, many states have established laws on cell phone use while driving. Eleven states, Washington D. C. , Puerto Rico, Guam and the U. S.  Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. No state bans all cell phone use for all drivers, but thirty seven states and Washington D. C. ban all cell phone use by novice drivers, and nineteen states and Washington D. C. prohibit it for school bus drivers. Washington was the first state to pass a texting ban in 2007. Currently, forty-one states, D. C. , Puerto Rico, Guam and the U. S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. An additional six states prohibit text messaging by novice drivers and three states restrict school bus drivers from texting. All but four states have primary enforcement, which means an officer may cite a driver for using a hand-held cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place (Governors Highway Safety Association, 2013). You can see that the states are cracking down on cell phone use while driving and it all is in response to the related dangers and safety concerns. Texting-while-driving penalties vary wildly from state to state and range from $20 to $10,000. These are the maximum penalties when no accident has occurred. In cases where texting while driving results in damage or injury, the punishment can go up quite sharply (Gareffa, 2013). In my home state of Colorado, per Colorado Revised Statute 42-4-239, drivers younger than 18 are prohibited from using cell phones (handheld or hands-free) while driving with a few exceptions for emergencies. All drivers are prohibited from texting while driving. A person who violates these laws commits a class A traffic violation and the fines would be fifty dollars for the first offense and one hundred dollars for a second or subsequent offense (Colorado Peace Officer’s Handbook, 2013). If you don’t know what the particular laws are in your home state, I strongly urge you to research that information. Conclusion As I stated in the beginning, we all rely on cell phones way too much and this is causing us to make some bad decisions. Due to our multi-tasking society we all tend to think we can handle using the cell phone while we’re driving. The reality is we are far more distracted when we talk on the phone while driving and this causes us to lose awareness of the environment around us. With the newer smart phones of today, texting has become a part of our existence. When we try to text while driving we have to take our eyes off the road, even if only for a second or two. This behavior endangers you and anybody around you. The statistics and data presented here and that is available at other various websites should be more than enough evidence to convince you that using your cell phone while driving is a bad idea. If its not and you want to continue your current behavior then you will be responsible for the consequences. The consequences will come from your particular state laws that have been established in response to safety concerns. As I previously stated: Driving is a dangerous activity in itself, but when you add other distractions like talking and or texting on a cell phone, the outcomes can be anything but pleasant and lead to extensive consequences. I hope my words here make you think twice the next time you pick up your cell phone while driving. I know I’m not perfect and I’m guilty of talking on the cell phone while driving, but after writing this I know my behavior will be changing.
